Attention Juniors and Seniors: The Sixth District Youth Ambassador Leadership Conference Applications from the office of Congressman Andy Barr are now available in the guidance office. The Youth Ambassador Leadership Conference is a non-partisan, educational experience designed for high school juniors and seniors who attend schools within Kentucky's Sixth Congressional District. This conference provides a unique opportunity for students to hear directly from Kentucky leaders, while also serving as an ambassador to their school. The program will consist of breakout sessions with speakers who serve as top leaders in the Commonwealth covering several important topics. This year's conference will be held in or near Lexington, KY on a Saturday in February. It is a goal that our Youth Ambassadors will return to their schools and communities and share what they learn with their classmates and fellow Kentuckians. Each applicant should provide basic contact information, a copy of his or her resume, and a 250-word essay outlining why he or she wishes to be a part of the program. Students should complete and return the application by January 13, 2020 to the mail, email, or fax listed on the bottom of the application. Participants will be notified of acceptance by email by January 20, 2020. Updates from the webThe U.S. Department of Education recently released updates to the College Scorecard, which is designed to help students as they are weighing education options after high school. For the first time, students can find important information on potential debt and what they can expect to earn one year after completing their education based on what they choose to study – including for two-year programs, four-year degrees, certificate programs and some graduate programs. Students also can use College Scorecard’s comparison tool to compare up to 10 school options to see how they stack up. | NKU Scholarship Deadline is February 15th!
Students should complete the scholarship application by February 15th. They can submit the application at scholarships.nku.edu. With the application, they will complete one required essay. If they want to apply to further scholarships, there will be additional essays for them to complete. They also need to apply by the February 15th date to be eligible for merit-based scholarships.
**You do not have to wait until this deadline to apply. We have started awarding scholarships, so they can go ahead and submit their application.

The NKU application is still open!
There are two ways to apply. Through our application or through the Common App!
Once they apply to NKU, they will need to submit a high school transcript, ACT or SAT scores as well as the $40 application fee or a fee waiver.
Transcript Retrieval
As a reminder, we request the students to send their high school transcript for their admission application. We can accept their transcript in many different ways. We will accept counselors emailing an official transcript through our [email protected] email account, through the mail, or electronic services such as: Parchment, Scrip-safe, National Student Clearing House, Scribbles, Overgrad, Scoir. If you have any questions on sending transcripts, please reach out to your NKU counselor.
Say "YES" to NKU!
If students are ready to confirm to NKU, they are now able to complete this process. They will visit our website to activate their account and then they will need to pay the $75 confirmation fee (or submit a fee waiver) to hold their spot.
Once they do that, they will receive an email to register for Northern Exposure: Orientation and Registration. Once they complete these two steps, they can declare they are Norse!
Spring Special Events
This spring we have many special visits dedicated to students who are making their final college decisions or simply students wanting to explore more about NKU. Here is a sneak peak of the spring visits! They will be online soon for students to register at visit.nku.edu.
Feb 8th- Admitted Student Basketball Game: We invite all admitted seniors and two guests to enjoy our Men's Basketball homecoming game for free!
Feb 29th- Honors Voyage: Students who have been accepted to the Honors College are invited to see a showcase of what this college has to offer students here at NKU.
March 20th- Admitted Student Day: Seniors will have the chance to visit NKU, have lunch with current NKU students and alumni and have an optional tour to ensure they are making the correct decision for their college experience.
April 23rd- Sophomore Showcase: If you have High School Sophomores that are interested in NKU, this is the program you can recommend to them. This program is dedicated to sophomores wanting to know more about NKU and how to start their college search process.
**Every Monday night in April we will be having a Student Services Night where students can stop in at our Welcome Center to complete any last minute items. We will have Admissions, Financial Aid, Orientation and Housing on site.
Visit NKU Daily We also encourage you to share with your students on all of the spring daily visits we have for students here at NKU. We have daytime visits called Norse Days where students can attend a presentation and a campus tour. Within Norse Days, they can also choose an academic session if they want to meet with the advisors and faulty personnel with their intended major.
We also have group visits if you want to bring your students to NKU as a group. You would get a presentation and a campus tour. These require reservations so please contact the Welcome Center to schedule your group visit at 859-572-1400.
We encourage you to forward the visit information to your students. They can register for any event on our website at visit.nku.edu.

The project explains the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse, how to get help for yourself or a friend, the places on college campuses where alcohol abuse is most likely to occur, the risks of alcohol abuse, and more. CHA is an exciting three-week residential opportunity for rising high school seniors (this year's juniors). During the three weeks, students earn 6 hours of college-level honors credit, have the opportunity to take 6 additional hours tuition free during their senior year, and earn a $2,000 housing scholarship for four years if they attend Murray State. More importantly, they have the opportunity to meet motivated, high achieving students from across the region and learn from some of the best faculty we have to offer.
This year, we celebrate our 20th anniversary, and our theme "Growing into Ourselves" will ask everyone to reflect on where they've been and look towards the future.
Our applications are up and running on the CHA website, and this year they are in an easy-to-fill-out Google form.
Interested students should have approximately a 3.5 GPA, a 25 composite on their ACT (or similar score on PSAT/SAT), and be at least 16 years old when CHA occurs (June 6-27). If you have students on the borderline, encourage them to apply.

 | The following is special joint message from Kentucky's Commissioner of Public Health and Kentucky's Commissioner of Education regarding the dangers of youth vaping and e-cigarette use. | Dear Superintendents, Principals and Counselors: The skyrocketing popularity and use of vaping products by children and youth has resulted in a recent outbreak of severe lung injury. We are writing to share important educational information and links to resources for school administrators, teachers, parents and students about the dangers of youth e-cigarette use and vaping. The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) has been investigating 30 potential cases of possible severe lung injury due to vaping. Of these 30 cases, three have been confirmed as vaping related illnesses, nine are probable cases and seven have been ruled out. Eleven cases are still under investigation. Of the nine probable cases, two of them were under the age of 18. As of Oct. 22, 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is aware of more than 1,600 cases in 49 states, and is reporting that there have been at least 34 deaths including a 17-year-old victim. The unprecedented increase in vaping by youth and young adults between 2017 and 2018 prompted the U.S. surgeon general to issue a public health advisory, which is an action taken only four times in the past 20 years. High school students increased tobacco use by 78% and middle school students increased tobacco use by 48% within a year. E-cigarettes are harmful to youth and young adults who may develop a nicotine addiction more easily because their brains are still developing. Additionally, there is substantial evidence to suggest that when youth are introduced to electronic vaping products, they are more likely to try traditional tobacco products. This increase in youth use is halting the progress made over the past decade to prevent new life-long addictions to tobacco. Schools with tobacco-free policies that include e-cigarettes promote a reduction in youth vaping. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute awards more than $1 million in college scholarships to exceptional student leaders each year. High school seniors nationwide who demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship are invited to apply for the 2020 GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program. This program annually provides college-bound students with $10,000 renewable scholarships – up to $40,000 total per recipient – and supports them as they lead and serve in college and beyond.
