As things are wrapping up on campus, we at Craft Academy are excited to be receiving Class of 2023 application materials!  While we are 56 days away from the February 1 deadline, we wanted to reach out to our high schools before you go on Winter Break.

A few reminders:

  • All applications must be fully submitted online, and supplemental items packets post marked by February 1, 2021.

For those students that are filling out their online application we have step by step instructions for completing the online application:  https://www.moreheadstate.edu/Academics/Craft-Academy/Prospective-Students/Apply-to-the-Craft-Academy
  • If students have not been able to attend an ACT test or did not meet the benchmarks from a previous test, Morehead State University’s Testing Center is able to offer an ACT-R (residual ACT) on campus.  The ACT-R results will only be valid at MSU and Craft Academy.  If you have a student that is interested in registering for an ACT-R  please have them email [email protected]

  • Students who are applying will need to request an official copy of their high school transcript, and that can be submitted to them, or mailed directly to our office.  Please know that we understand that many schools may be virtual, and the counselor may not have access to the buildings in some cases – we are willing to work with counselors.  Should this be the case, please contact [email protected] for alternate methods.

  • We are continuing to offer weekday Virtual Visits until Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. EST.  Students, and families are invited to attend and learn more about our program and ask any questions they may have about the application process.  We are also available to schedule a specific session at an alternate time if needed.

  • Our office will be closed Dec. 18 at 4:30 p.m. - Jan. 4 at 8 a.m. - however, should a student have a question, or concern, they can email us and we will have LIMITED access to email during Winter Break.

We really appreciate you sharing this information with your students, as we know that it is a very hectic time.

If we can help in any way please do not hesitate to reach out, or have your students reach out!

Thanks!

Sunny

On Sept. 15, 2020, NASA, in partnership with Future Engineers, launched the Artemis Moon Pod Essay Contest. The contest, which is open to all (public, private, and home school) students in grades K-12, asks participants to imagine they are leading a one-week expedition to the Moon’s South Pole. In the essay, students will need to describe to NASA what (and who) they would bring to help make their expedition a success.

The Moon Pod Essay Contest is presented in support of NASA's Artemis program. The student challenge is part of NASA's efforts to engage the public in its missions to the Moon and Mars. NASA is returning to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new generation. Working with its partners throughout the Artemis program, the agency will fine-tune precision landing technologies and develop new mobility capabilities that allow robots and crew to travel greater distances and explore new regions of the Moon.

Visit the Artemis Moon Pod Essay Contest page for important program dates: https://www.futureengineers.org/artemismoonpodessay

The challenge will require students to imagine and share their thoughts on leading a one-week expedition at the Moon’s South Pole. Additionally, participants must include the types of skills, attributes, and/or personality traits they would want their Moon Pod crew to have and why. For a full description of the contest, including the requirements and who can enter, visit the Moon Pod Essay Contest website.

Every student who submits an entry will receive a certificate from NASA and be invited to a special NASA virtual event – with an astronaut!

Selected semifinalists will be invited to represent their state or territory in a series of Artemis Explorer sessions with NASA experts. Moreover, nine finalists will travel with a parent to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 2021 to learn about lunar exploration, and the national winner in each grade division will win a family trip to see the first Artemis test launch to watch the most powerful rocket in the world launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Entries for the contest are due no later than 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time on Dec. 17, 2020. Children and students who live in the same household with NASA employees cannot enter. Read the full description of contest rules at Artemis Moon Pod Essay Contest ("The Challenge") Rules

Dear Counselor,

Whether your students are back in school, learning remotely, or participating in a hybrid model, we know they're working closely with you on their journey to college. The College Board Opportunity Scholarships program was created to help your students complete steps for college while earning the chance at scholarships. Encourage your seniors to sign up for the program at cb.org/opportunity for a guide to college and a path to scholarships.

The first step in helping your students earn scholarships is to take the College Board Opportunity Scholarships pledge. When you sign up for the pledge, you'll receive a free digital toolkit as well as monthly reminders and resources.

Take the Pledge

Most students need financial aid to help pay for college. By completing the FAFSA®, students might qualify for thousands of dollars in federal grants, work-study, low-cost loans, and state and college scholarships. There's no other way to gain access to this money.

Encourage your students to complete the FAFSA and earn a chance at a $1,000 scholarship.

Completing the FAFSA is an urgent and important step—not just for accessing financial aid, but for staying on track to enroll in college. Research shows that 90% of students who complete the FAFSA enroll immediately in college—versus only 55% of students who don't file.

Between October and February, the College Board will award $800,000 to seniors who complete the FAFSA.

Tell your students to visit getfafsahelp.org for instructions on how to sign up for Wyatt?, a free FAFSA assistance chatbot that answers their questions by text. When students sign up for Wyatt and text their financial aid questions, Wyatt sends answers via text, a familiar medium that doesn't require internet access. Wyatt is available 24/7.

Seniors: Complete the FAFSA

Scholarship Tip: Complete the FAFSA for a Chance to Earn $1,000 for College

Thank you for your commitment to your students.

Sincerely,

College Board

Heisman Scholarship Application is now open!

HiCynthia,

We’re excited to announce that the 2021 Profile in Courage Essay Contest for high school students is now open! You can learn more here.

We encourage you to write a 1,000 word essay describing a leader who demonstrated political courage as described by President Kennedy in his book, Profiles in Courage. Winning essays tell the stories of courageous lawmakers who stood up for what was right rather than what was easy or politically convenient. Today, as students like you are learning virtually or are back in the classroom, it’s clear that times are different. Our country is depending on leaders to demonstrate political courage — which is why your essays about inspiring choices are so important.

This year, you can win one of 15 scholarship awards for college, including a $10,000 first-place prize. Find out more about the contest here.
All essays must be submitted before January 15, 2021 — so don’t wait! We look forward to reading your essay and learning about a time when a leader’s political courage inspired you. If you are no longer a student, we hope you will share these details with someone that could benefit from this opportunity.

Best wishes,

Esther Kohn
