At SSE, we believe in educating the whole child, that's why we offer several extra curricular programs students can become involved with. These are just a few of our many programs:
Academic Team
The Academic Team usually consists of 16-18 students. To be a member of the team you must be a 4th or 5th grader, be willing to learn, listen and get along with others. Students must maintain A-B Honor Roll status. Students that are chosen also need to be quick with buzzing in for Quick Recall. Academic team try outs are held in late fall.
Members are chosen by trying out for the team. Students are made aware of the try out date, take written assessments and do a round of Quick Recall. The coaches then evaluate the results and choose the team members for the school year. We work together as one big team.
The Academic Team is made up of three parts: Quick Recall, Future Problem Solving and Written Assessment. Students can play in one, two or all three areas.
Quick Recall is much like Jeopardy. Two teams of four students are asked a question. You must buzz in to answer. The team that gets the question right gets the opportunity to answer the next question first.
Future Problem Solving is where a team of 4 students work together to solve a problem set in the future. Students learn the 6 step process in order to fully answer the future scene.
Written Assessment is broken down into the following areas: Math, Arts and Humanities, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, and Composition. These assessments are multiple choice with an open response at the end. Composition is where students are given a topic and write a short essay about it.
Children's All State Chorus
Each year, advanced vocal students are encouraged to audition for the KY All State Children’s Chorus held in Louisville in February. Two hundred students from across the state are auditioned (by tape) and accepted into the chorus.
Once accepted, students practice at their school, memorizing their music, and then go to Louisville for 2 days. This is an overnight stay at the Galt House (where rehearsals are conducted) ending with a concert in the KY Center for the Arts.
D.A.R.E
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education)
SSE is excited to partner with our local law enforcement to provide all 5th grade students participation in the Anderson County D.A.R.E. program. Students learn about the dangers of drug use, ways to stay healthy and how to deal with peer pressure. Lessons are given in a fun and engaging manner. At the end of the year, students participate in a DARE graduation ceremony and attend a celebration picinic.
Star Patrol
The duties of the Star Patrol are to ensure the safety of all the students at Saffell Street Elementary. Student’s who are interested in being a participant submit an application to the Star Patrol Coordinator, with prior approval from the student’s current and previous year’s teacher. The student must write a paragraph explaining why they want to be a star patrol member and why safety is important to our school and be recommended by two SSE staff members. Criteria for selection include the following:
*Students must model appropriate behavior across all school settings.
*Students chose to be responsible (homework, and daily work is completed, not referrals, etc). *Students are able to work in a team situation successfully.
*Students are self-directed and assertive, with a positive attitude.
*Students must maintain a “C” average or above.
*Students must be able to follow adult and Captains requests.
Upon completion of application the determination of finalists for Star Patrol is based upon the above criteria by a committee of Saffell Street Staff.
STLP
The Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP™) is a project-based learning program that empowers students to use technology to learn and achieve. Students in grades 3-5 will get the chance to work with various types of technology such as camcorders, digital cameras, and IPADS in ways that help enhance the school community. STLP provides leadership and collaboration opportunities for students.
We are excited to announce that our STLP has achieved the honor of Gold Status. We are the only elementary in our district and one of 66 schools out of over 700 in the state to receive this distinction.
